Beatrice Hirt - The world’s best Interior that you and the other jury member have awarded at the Insidedesign Festival, The Waterhouse at South Bund by Neri&Hu, is representing a harmony in cotrasts. What did you especially love at this project, what makes it the best of the best?
Ilse Crawford - It was hard to make such a judgement; in the final line up for the Inside Festival there were some very different projects. From a museum installation to a football training school. So we looked at the context, content and effect. This project must have been hard to do. To persuade the client to do a project that involved preserving the identity of a Shanghai lane house cant have been easy.It was executed very intelligently..with references to the life in the houses such as keeping the stairways and the distinction between the different houses. And it is an example of how by demonstrating how they can generate economic value, such culturally significant buildings can be preserved.
BH - You are both virtuosic players with the contrasts. Where do you see the difference in your design expression?
Ilse Crawford -In execution Neri&Hu’s approach is a touch more cerebral than ours.
BH - The surprise of this festival were the big number of winning projects of designers from the south hemisphere. How do you explain their rising success in Europe even though their cultural and mental heritage is very different?
Ilse Crawford - There were some really excellent projects. Good design speaks across cultural boundaries.
